Combat sport fans met with an unexpected twist at the iconic Times Square in New York. The highly anticipated rematch between Ryan Garcia and David Haney has now been forfeited after a surprise win by Rolando “Rolly” Romero via a unanimous decision. While Romero still believes that a rematch between Garcia and Haney could still be on the cards, the unfavorable results for Garcia might shift the tide in the other direction.

Ryan Garcia’s future gets unstable after a unanimous loss to Rolando Romero

The bout started with Ryan Garcia pushing Rolando Romero to the edge with several jabs and crisp shots landing on the latter. However, the tables turned once Romera took charge and dropped Garcia twice with two left hooks. From this point, the rounds between the fighters were quite neck-to-neck, with the final decision favoring Romero with a unanimous win. The judges’ scorecards read like 115-112, 115-112 and 118-109.
Despite giving his best and being advised by his trainer, Derrick James, on multiple occasions in between the rounds, the boxer could not jump back to secure the win. It seems like the 1-year layoff took a toll on Garcia, thereby having an impact on the fighter’s punch outputs.
The fighter, however, showed his sportsmanship in the post-fight interview, thereby maintaining the decorum of the sport. He stated, “He fought a good fight, caught me early, no excuses, man. Congrats to him and he did a great job. That’s it.”

Garcia was further asked if the layoff was a major reason for the fighter not throwing punches inside the ring, to which he replied, “I just think that whole year [layoff] took a lot [out] of my body physically and mentally. I'm just happy that I made it into the ring and went 12 rounds. So, thank God for the opportunity. And hats off to Rolly. You did a great job”
While the dreams for a rematch with David Haney got crushed, Garcia was asked about his next plan of action. The fighter stated, “Just got going on the drawing board with my team. We will talk it over and we will see what we do next.
