Taylor Swift has just received some welcome news in her ongoing battle to protect her privacy. After years of facing public tracking of her private jet flights, new legislation from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) could make it significantly harder for individuals to share real-time details about her travel.
FAA introduces new rules to enhance privacy for private aircraft owners
On Friday, the FAA enacted new regulations that allow private aircraft owners to request the withholding of their registration numbers for non-commercial flights. Additionally, the law ensures that personal details—including names, addresses, phone numbers, and emails—are kept out of public records. This move is expected to offer high-profile individuals like Taylor Swift an extra layer of security.
A key aspect of the law allows aircraft owners who can prove a security risk to apply for a new aircraft identification code. This code, used by the automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) system to track flights, will provide an added shield of privacy for those who qualify.
Taylor Swift has long fought against public tracking of her flights
Swift and her legal team have been vocal about the dangers of publicly sharing her flight details. In recent years, Florida college student Jack Sweeney has been operating social media accounts that post real-time updates about Swift’s private jet movements, raising serious safety concerns.
Back in February, Swift’s lawyers issued a Cease and Desist letter to Sweeney, accusing him of "stalking and harassing behavior" by "consistently publishing real-time and precise information about our Client's location and future whereabouts." The letter further stated, "This conduct poses an imminent threat to the safety and wellbeing of our Client and must stop."
Swift’s team argued that Sweeney’s actions disregarded her personal safety in exchange for public attention and financial gain. However, Sweeney’s attorneys defended his actions, claiming there was "nothing unlawful" about sharing publicly available flight information.
With the new FAA regulations in place, it will likely become much harder for individuals like Sweeney to track and share Swift’s flights. Given her previous legal efforts to shut down such activity, it is expected that Swift will take advantage of these new protections and apply to keep her flight data private.
