Fatal accident on Mumbai's Atal Setu: 28-year-old driving BMW at 180kmph dies after crashing into dumper
MUMBAI: A 28-year-old behind the wheel of a rented SUV lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a dumper on the Atal Setu early Friday morning.
Preliminary inquiries and CCTV footage revealed that Punit Singh Majra, a resident of Chembur, was driving at a speed of 180 kmph.
Police took help from the quick response squad posted on the highway to extract the body from the mangled vehicle. According to police, Punit Majra, son of a real estate agent, was driving the BMW X1 model on the northbound lane of the Atal Setu towards Panvel at around 2.30 am when he lost control and rammed into a dumper. The impact was such that the wreckage of the car was entangled with the loaded dumper.
"Passersby alerted the police control room. Sewree police rushed to the spot. Due to the speed at which the car collided, the dumper was also damaged," said a police officer.

He added that they removed the driver by opening the boot door, which was the only part that remained in the vehicle, and rushed him to a govt hospital at Kamothe, where doctors declared him dead. Doctors said Punit Singh had serious head injuries.

Sewree police station found his personal details on an I-card and informed his father. Police have sent his blood samples to a forensic laboratory to determine if he had consumed alcohol.

On a complaint by the dumper driver, police have booked Majra under BNS sections for death due to negligence, rash driving and endangering life and personal safety.
