India Pakistan Ceasefire Live highlights: 'Pak has violated ceasefire over last few hours, India giving befitting reply,' says MEA

India Pakistan Tensions Live Updates: India and Pakistan are currently facing one of the most intense periods of border tensions in recent years, triggered by the launch of Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025. Early on Friday morning, loud explosions reverberated through Jammu city, causing a total blackout just hours after India foiled Pakistan’s attempt to target military installations along the border. Reports indicated the presence of loitering munitions in the skies.

Similarly, the border town of Jaisalmer experienced loud explosions during the night, while blackouts were imposed across western Rajasthan's districts bordering Pakistan, plunging the area into darkness. A senior official also confirmed that a series of blasts persisted for nearly an hour.

Multiple districts of Punjab, Chandigarh, and parts of Haryana, including Panchkula, Ambala, and Sirsa also faced these blackouts. These measures were taken amid rising military tensions following India's Operation Sindoor and the increasing threat of airstrikes.

These tensions escalated after Operation Sindoor was carried out in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people including 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali tourist. The strike targeted nine key terrorist infrastructures linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), and Hizbul Mujahideen (HM), spanning locations in both Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

According to official sources, the operation commenced at 1:05 am and concluded by 1:30 am, with some follow-up strikes taking place at 1:44 am. The attack was aimed at neutralising the operational bases of major terror outfits while consciously avoiding Pakistani military installations. This approach, military officials said, was to prevent an all-out escalation while still delivering a strong message.

Among the targets were JeM’s headquarters in Bahawalpur and LeT’s base in Muridke. Other sites hit included terrorist locations in Sialkot and Tehra Kalan in Pakistan, and Muzaffarabad and Kotli in PoK. The military described the strikes as "focused, measured, and non-escalatory," aimed solely at terrorist facilities. The operation was briefed to the public by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh during a press conference in New Delhi.

In response, Pakistan’s prime minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the strikes, calling them an “act of war” and vowing that a firm response was already underway. He said that the entire Pakistani nation stood in solidarity with its armed forces and was prepared for any further developments. Sharif also warned of Pakistan’s right to retaliate, heightening concerns of broader military engagement in the region.

The government, meanwhile, said that the action was necessary and justified. Earlier during a cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, praised the armed forces for their precision and bravery. He expressed pride in the success of the operation and urged continued vigilance against future threats.

The conflict attracted the attention of many international leaders. US President Donald Trump commented on the situation, expressing concern over the rising tensions. "It’s so terrible," he said, adding that he had good relations with both India and Pakistan and hoped to see the two nations resolve the conflict. "Hopefully they can stop now, as they have gone tit-for-tat," Trump said, offering to assist in de-escalation efforts if needed.

"Due to recent news in the media and as a precautionary measure, we are turning off street lights in some parts of Jalandhar. Blackout is not called at this time. Plz be calm as Jalandhar is unaffected at this point of time," the statement reads.

India said on Saturday that Pakistan has violated the understanding reached between DGMOs of the two countries earlier in the day on the stoppage of firing and military action, and that the Indian Army is retaliating and dealing with the border intrusions.

At a special briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said this is a breach of the understanding arrived at earlier today and India takes "very serious note of these violations".

India called upon Pakistan to take appropriate steps to address these violations and deal with the situation with seriousness and responsibility.

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi had a phone conversation with Indian National Security Advisor Doval

As per Chinese Foreign Ministry, "Doval said that the Pahalgam terrorist attack caused serious casualties among Indian personnel and that India needed to take counter-terrorism actions. War was not India's choice and was not in the interests of any party. Sirens blared and explosions echoed across India’s border states on Saturday evening as Pakistan once again launched drones into Indian airspace, just hours after both countries agreed to a ceasefire.

Loud blasts were reported in Srinagar, while air raid sirens went off in Udhampur and other parts of the Jammu region.

Blackouts were enforced in several areas across Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan as a precaution amid what marks another Pakistani drone intrusion in a series of night-time provocations.

What makes this attack particularly significant is that it came just after Pakistan itself reached out to India earlier in the day, proposing a full ceasefire across land, air, and sea-a move later confirmed by ministry of external affairs.

There are no pre-conditions and post-conditions in India-Pak ceasefire: MEA sources

India and Pakistan reached an understanding after the Pakistan side reached out to India. There are no pre-conditions and post-conditions. Indus Water Treaty remains in abeyance. And all other measures remain suspended. India's position on Terrorism remains the same: MEA Sources

20:13 (IST) May 10

There’s a palpable sense of disappointment among many Indians today, especially within strategic and nationalist circles, over India agreeing to a ceasefire with Pakistan. The prevailing sentiment is that India had the upper hand — Pakistan’s air defences were effectively neutralised at key locations, major airbases suffered significant damage, and every Pakistani aerial, drone, and missile assault was successfully intercepted or neutralised. Their only “success” was limited to indiscriminate cross-border shelling that tragically claimed innocent civilian lives.

So the question being asked is — why agree to a ceasefire now? Why not press forward, or even reclaim POK?

But here’s what most people are missing: Pakistan is a failed state.

It has nothing to lose. Its leaders have already looted the country and stashed their wealth abroad. Any escalation would only hurt India — the fastest-growing large global economy, a rising geopolitical force, and a nation with far more at stake in global stability, trade, and perception.

20:09 (IST) May 10

After days of mounting escalation between India and Pakistan, both countries agreed on Saturday to a ceasefire, halting all military action across land, air, and sea. The decision carries no preconditions, either before or after the agreement. It is also included that the Indus Water Treaty shall remain in abeyance, as MEA sources confirmed

All the retaliatory measures announced against Pakistan on April 23 will remain in place.

After the terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, India took several strong steps against Pakistan for supporting cross-border terrorism.

The ministry of external affairs exposed the "misinformation campaign" run by Pakistan with several claims including that it inflicted damage to S-400 & BrahMoS missile. This came after India formally declared that the two nations had decided to put an end to the firing and military action that started after the relations deteriorated post Pahalgam terror attack.

In a press briefing on Saturday, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi said, "Pakistan claimed that it damaged our S400 and Brahmos missile base with its JF 17, which is completely wrong.Secondly, it also ran a misinformation campaign that our airfields in Sirsa, Jammu, Pathankot, Bhatinda, Nalia and Bhuj were damaged, and its misinformation is also completely wrong."

Pakistan announces opening of its airspace for all kinds of traffic after ceasefire with India

Pakistan announced on Saturday that it was opening its airspace for all kinds of traffic, shortly after the announcement of a ceasefire with India. Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) made the announcement as apparently normalcy returns to the country after the raging tension with India seems to be ending.

"All airports in the country are available for normal flight operations. Passengers are requested to contact the relevant airline for the latest schedule of their flights," the PAA said.

It also said that Pakistan's airspace has been fully restored for all types of flights, and all airports in the country are available for normal flight operations.

Pakistan's airspace remained closed for a certain duration and routes due to the tension with India, which hampered regular air traffic, resulting in inconvenience for passengers.

The decision to open airspace showed that clouds on the horizon of Pakistan and India are lifting.

India-Pak tensions: Villagers from 3 border districts in Kashmir move to other areas in view of Pak shelling

Residents of villages located near the Line of Control (LoC) in three districts of Kashmir are leaving their homes in droves as Pakistan has intensified its shelling of civilian areas over the last four days. Nearly 1.1 lakh people living along the LoC in Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts have moved to safer places as dozens of houses and government buildings have been hit by Pakistani shells.

"It is not easy to leave behind a place where you have spent all your life. I would not leave my home if the threat to my life and that of my family was not so high," Irshad Ahmad Khwaja, a resident of a border village, told PTI.

Khwaja has shifted to a relative's house in Baramulla and does not expect to face much difficulty.

"I know we will be taken care of but I am still very sad. I have lived in this house all my life," he said as he looked back at his home one last time.

Mubeen Ahmad, a resident of Boniyar in the Uri area of Baramulla, said he was not sure whether his house would survive the current wave of cross-border shelling.

"We have seen cross-border shelling since the 1990s but it has never been this intense. These days, shells are landing at places that were earlier considered safe," Ahmad said.

He said another cause of concern for house owners is the possibility of thefts and break-ins.

"Unscrupulous elements have always used a turmoil to carry out their nefarious designs. I hope that it does not happen during this calamity," he added.

The evacuation started after Pakistan resorted to unprovoked shelling on civilian areas along the LoC in response to the missile strikes carried out by Indian armed forces targeting the terror infrastructure in the neighbouring country.

'Pakistan uses Islam as facade for terrorism': Owaisi blasts Pak for weaponising religion to promote terror

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday launched a sharp and direct critique of Pakistan's attempts to create religious divisions within India and said that Pakistan's terrorist actions are less about religious solidarity and more about political and strategic gains masked by religious rhetoric.

Speaking to ANI about his views on Pakistan trying to divide Indian society based on religion, he said, "It is the deep state of Pakistan that only uses Islam as a facade to cover their illegal activities, to cover their promotion of terrorism."

Owaisi strongly reaffirms that Indian Muslims, including their forefathers, rejected Muhammad Ali Jinnah's Two-Nation Theory (which led to the creation of Pakistan) and chose to live in a secular, democratic India.

He also points out the inconsistency and hypocrisy in Pakistan's use of religion as a political tool and said that while Pakistan claims to champion Muslim causes, it has been violent toward other Muslim communities, such as Afghans, Iranians, and the Balochs.

Pakistan conveniently forgets that there are more than 230 million Muslims living in India and our forefathers rejected the two-country theory. We despise, we rejected the two-nation theory proposed by Jinnah, and we accepted India as our country and will continue to stay here. Pakistan wants to divide India on the lines of religion, it wants to create more friction between Indian Muslims, Hindus and other communities over here. When Pakistan talks about the two-nation theory, why are they bombing Afghanistan border posts?...why are they bombing Iranian border posts?...Afghanis and Iranians are Muslims...it is the deep state of Pakistan, which only uses Islam as a facade to cover up all illegal activities and their promotion of terrorism. This is what they have been doing for the last 75 years against India.

As Pakistani forces continued to target civilian population with heavy shelling from across the border, huge damage was witnessed to residences of locals in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri due to heavy cross-border shelling.

J-K Administration Services officer Raj Kumar Thapa, who was a resident of Rajouri also lost his life in these attacks after his home was targeted due to continuous shelling by Pakistan.

Heavy cross-border shelling by Pakistan caused damage to homes and religious sites in J&K's Kupwara, Uri, and Poonch. Locals vowed to stand with the Indian army despite the attacks.

Pakistan Army on Saturday continued to target civilian areas in the Poonch sector by conducting heavy shelling. Houses, water tanks, and other civil infrastructure suffered heavy damage in the attack.

Turkish Kamikaze drone recovered in J&K's Naushera, Pakistan targets civilians

150 More Updates
Early Friday morning, panic spread in Jammu after a total blackout was enforced following air-raid sirens and loud explosions near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch and Rajouri. Around the same time, the Border Security Force (BSF) stopped a major infiltration attempt in Samba district. The BSF said the incident happened at 11 PM on May 8 and was handled by alert troops.

On Friday, the Indian Army successfully shot down over 50 swarm drones during several Pakistani attempts to breach the Line of Control (LoC) and international border on Thursday night, military sources said.

In a large-scale counter-drone operation, air defence units used advanced systems such as L-70 guns, Zu-23mm guns, Schilka systems, and specialised anti-drone equipment across key sectors, including Udhampur, Samba, Jammu, Akhnoor, Nagrota, and Pathankot.

Unverified reports also suggested that air defence systems may have shot down a Pakistani air force jet over Punjab’s Pathankot sector. Meanwhile, in the Naushera sector, Army anti-drone systems destroyed two Pakistani UAVs during a fierce exchange of artillery fire.

The Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) has confirmed that military installations in Jammu, Pathankot, and Udhampur were targeted with a mix of drones and missiles. However, they were successfully intercepted using a combination of kinetic and non-kinetic measures, with no casualties reported.

The Union home minister Amit Shah also convened a high-level emergency meeting with the heads of all border guarding forces and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to assess preparedness and security across borders and airports.

On the global front, US Vice President JD Vance, who was in India during the Pahalgam attack, issued a statement saying the US will not intervene as this is “a regional conflict”. Vance also highlighted that while Washington is concerned about escalating tensions between two nuclear powers, it will only encourage peaceful dialogue without taking sides.

External affairs minister S Jaishankar has also been actively engaged in diplomacy, speaking to global leaders including Italy’s Foreign Minister and the European Commission Vice-President. He reaffirmed that India’s response has been "targeted, proportional, and focused on terror infrastructure."

India also firmly denied Pakistan’s claim of the Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project in PoK being targeted during the May 7 strikes. The government further warned Pak of serious consequences if Pak uses this “blatant lie” as an excuse to attack any Indian infrastructure. Foreign secretary Vikram Misri said that it was Pakistan that triggered the current tensions with the Pahalgam terror attack, and it is now up to Pakistan to choose de-escalation. Misri also said that Pak had resorted to using a disinformation war against India with its claims.

Pakistan, meanwhile, has reportedly retaliated with another wave of drone and missile attacks late Thursday night, targeting regions such as Satwari, RS Pura, and Arnia. All eight missiles were intercepted, and no casualties have been reported.

Officials have also confirmed that debris from Pakistani drones and missiles was recovered at several locations, serving as concrete evidence of the assault.
